La Posada Event
Welcoming the Stranger
“La Posada Providencia, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Divine Providence, is a ministry for people in crisis from around the world, who are seeking legal refuge in this country. The shelter staff provides a safe and welcoming home, mentors to promote self-sufficiency and cultural integration, and imparts values which witness God’s Providence in our world.” This statement explains the mission of La Posada.
Lambda Eta will be going to La Posada Providencia in San Benito on Sunday, April 22 to provide a potluck dinner for the clients there. This coincides with Earth Day as well. We will be there from 5-7 pm. This event is sponsored on behalf of the Global Awareness Committee. Bea Cruz will have a sign up sheet for those interested in attending and bringing a dish to share.
Member Pat Crunk volunteers as an ESL instructor at La Posada. Rita Galloway and Susan Kerens will soon begin terms as new Board Members.
Sea Turtle Inc.
Members met on South Padre Island at Sea Turtle Inc. on March 3 to enjoy a tour and information at the new STI world class facility. We all had a great time learning about sea turtles, touring the education center and new facility, attending sessions, viewing sea turtles and gathering for lunch at White Sands. It was a fabulous, fun field trip enjoyed by nearly 40 of Lambda Eta’s family and friends!
A donation was made to Sea Turtle Inc for their education programs.
Honduran Teachers
Friends United sponsored teachers from Honduras were able to participate in activities sponsored by Lambda Eta members. Member Dorothea Cole hosted them at her home in Los Fresnos and her husband Fred served as driver. They were able to visit Sea Turtle Inc.,. go out to eat at White Sands, tour TSTC and visit college classes, spend a day sewing with Linda Correa-Garcia, and spend a Saturday at the home of Rita Galloway where members presented on a variety of topics and served them lunch.
Topics presented were SPED, differentiation, science, art, and math. Afterwards the teachers were chauffeured to Burlington so they could do some last minute shopping before Fred came to pick them up.
It was an honor to work with these happy, enthusiastic women. We hope we have impacted their lives in some small way.
January Fitness Meeting
Our January/February meeting focused on fitness. It began with a 5K Walk/Run for any interested members beginning at McKelvey Park, followed by making healthy yogurt parfaits before our general meeting started. During our Meeting we had presentations by Edna Claus on the benefits of Zumba and from Valley Baptist Health Club on Sit-n-Fit, a way to exercise while seated. Members participated as they were able.
