Literacy Backpack Project

Lambda Eta members donated backpacks, supplies, books, and $500 to HCISD Social Workers for foster children in HCISD. Adriana Garcia, HCISD Social Worker, presented the project to Lambda Eta members at the February 2022 meeting. The completed backpacks were then donated to HCISD Parental Involvement at the start of the 2022-23 school year.

Caps/Lids for Kids

Each month we gather caps/lids from our students, family, friends, and church families.  These will be donated to a project that uses these hard plastics to make prothesis for children.  It takes about 10,000 caps to make one child prothesis.

Field Trip to Valley Nature Center

In November seven members and one guest took a field trip to Valley Nature Center in Weslaco.  It was a fabulous opportunity to see the facilities and learn about the opportunities they have for families and school children year round.  School groups can tour any time during the school year to see the turtles, birds, butterflies, plants, and more.  During summer months they sponsor camps for a variety of ages and interests.  They are especially proud of the camps they hold for children with disabilities, especially the camp they hold for children of the entire Valley who have diabetes.

Following the introduction and viewing of the Nature Center displays, the group was given a private tour through the nature area.  Plants and wildlife were in abundance, but especially entertaining were the fresh water turtles in the pond.   It is a beautiful area , well worth visiting!

We all traveled to Nana’s after our visit to enjoy a fabulous lunch!

Ready, Set, Be Healthy

We met at 8 am on January 26 at McKelvey Park for the 2nd Annual Lambda Eta 5K/1 Mile Walk/Run.  It was time to get busy with those resolutions to get in better shape so, we got some exercise before our meeting!

We followed our exercise with a presentation by Sandra Betancourt LD.  She got us motivated to eat healthy and move more!

Teachers from Honduras

For the last 6 years we have helped provide inservice for teachers that travel to South Texas through Friends United.  This year the teachers came in April and were involved with us in many activities.  They were here for our April meeting so were able to meet with members and discuss their situations in Honduras.  We took them to Dick Office Supply to spend the $50 we gave to each teacher.  Members invited them out to eat on several occasions or provided food to be delivered to Dorothea and Fred Cole.  Linda Correa-Garcia hosted them for a day of sewing a backpack and Rita Galloway hosted them for an afternoon of inservice training.
